Rhinos vs Montreal
Rivalry Renewed.

news: homervsimpactbart2.PNGFriday night kick starts the 2008 edition of perhaps the USL's biggest rivalry: The Rochester Rhinos and Montreal Impact. The match will be broadcast live on national television throughout the United States on Fox Soccer Channel, and in Canada on Sports World. Kick-off is slated for 8:00pm at PaeTec Park this Friday. The second game of the home and home series is scheduled for 3:30pm on Sunday the 27th at Saputo Stadium in Montreal.

The rivalry has had more than it's share of memorable moments, a few of which include a rain soaked match (8/20/05, Rhinos 2:2 Impact), fisticuffs thrown at halftime in the locker room (8/27/04, Rhinos 2:0 Impact), and a controversial no goal in Montreal during the playoffs in 2004 which ultimately denied the Rhinos a chance to knock their rivals from the playoffs that season. (To read more about the rivary visit the Rhinos Paroxysm blog @ http://rhinosparoxysm.blogspot.com )

news: ZeSalles.jpgRhinos midfielder Ze Roberto, who is currently recovering from injury, and striker Mauricio Salles are 2 of just 5 current players involved in the rivalry to have played for both clubs involved in the derby. The Impact possess ex-Rhinos Pato Aguilera, Mauro Biello, and Gabe Gervais. Salles suited up for Montreal in 2006, while Ze Roberto was a mainstay in the Montreal midfield from 2002-2007.

The Rhinos are 4-0-1 in their previous five contests, and 6-1-3 in their last ten, improving their record to 6-5-6 while moving into 3rd place in the USL First Division. Midfielder Johnny Menyongar was named the USL First Division Player of the Week for his efforts in the Rhinos weekend road trip. Menyongar had 2 assists in the Rhinos 3-1 win at Seattle on Friday night, and he scored the lone goal of Sunday's 1-0 victory in Minnesota.

The Impact are 2-2-1 in their last 5 games, and currently sit in 10th place with a record of 5-8-3. Striker Roberto Brown leads the way for Montreal with 2 goals and 3 assists, while midfielder Rocco Placentino has 2 goals and 2 assists. Goalkeeper Matthew Jordan is 5-7-3 in goal for the Impact, with a 0.80 GAA and 5 shutouts to his credit.

All-Time: The Rhinos are 13-24-5 all-time against Montreal. They are 12-7-2 at home, but are 1-17-3 in Montreal.
Last 5: The Rhinos are 4-0-1 in their last 5 games. Montreal is 2-2-1 in their last 5.
Pat Ercoli Night: Friday night will be Pat Ercoli Night at PaeTec Park. The former Rhinos coach managed the club to 3 league titles (1998, 2000 and 2001) and to the 1999 U.S. Open Cup championship in 1999.

Menyongar Named USL First Division Player of the Week; Four Players Honored
news: jm10.jpgRhinos midfielder Johnny Menyongar was named the USL First Division Player of the Week for the weekend of July 20, after a pair of brilliant efforts. During the Rhinos two game weekend road trip, the Liberian midfielder tallied two assists in Friday's 3-1 victory in Seattle before scoring his fourth goal of the season in Sunday's 1-0 victory in Minnesota. Menyongar has now taken over the team lead in points, with 11 (4 goals, 3 assists), and is tied for the club lead in both goals and assists.

The Rhinos weekend sweep saw three more players named to the Team of the Week, as goalkeeper Scott Vallow, defender Danny Earls, and midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer shared honors. Vallow recorded his 6th shutout of the season in Sunday's victory, while Earls recorded an assist in Friday night's victory. Kreamalmeyer added a goal and an assist to his season total.
Rhinos Climb to Third Place
RhinosThe Rochester Rhinos took 6 out of 6 points this weekend on their 2 game roadtrip, downing the Seattle Sounders 3-1 on Friday night before defeating the Minnesota Thunder 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Johnny Menyongar made his case for player of the week honors, tallying 1 goal and 2 assists over the 2 game span, bringing his total season tally to 4 goals and 3 assists on the season, placing him atop the Rhinos in both categories. Menyongar recorded his 2 assists during Friday night's victory, and scored the lone goal of Sunday's victory in his return to Minnesota, where he played from 2000-2005.

Luke Kreamalmeyer also made a case for team of the week honors, as he added a goal and an assist to his season tally bringing his numbers to 2 goals and 4 assists during the campaign.

Midfieder/assistant coach Steve Guppy was sent off during the second half of Sunday's victory, and his status for the weekend series with Montreal is uncertain at the moment.

Scott Vallow and the Rhinos defense continue to be stingy, as they have recorded 3 shutouts in their previous 4 games, and have conceded just 1 goal in their last 449 minutes of action.

The Rhinos improved their record to 6-5-6 with the pair of victories, placing them into a tie for 3rd place with the Vancouver Whitecaps with 24 points. In their previous 10 games, the Rhinos are 6-1-3.

The Rhinos welcome the despised Montreal Impact to PaeTec Park on Friday night, for an 8:00pm kick-off in a game nationally televised throughout the United States and Canada on Fox Soccer Channel. The Rhinos will then travel to Montreal two days later to take on the Impact.

The Rhinos are coming off of a weekend in which they took 4 out of 6 points, downing the Seattle Sounders 1-0 before drawing the Miami FC Blues to a score of 0-0. Luke Kreamalmeyer scored the lone goal for the Rhinos over the span of two matches, netting the winner against Seattle in the 7th minute.

Seattle is coming off of a 1-0 defeat of the Montreal Impact on Sunday,
with Sebastien Le Toux scoring the match's only goal, his 7th of the season, in the 73rd minute. The win ended the Sounders' 5 game winless streak, in which they had gone 0-2-3 in the process.

The Minnesota Thunder currently sit in 10th place, one spot behind the Rhinos, with a record of 4-7-5. After starting the season 4-2-1, the Thunder are 0-5-4 in their previous 9 matches. Duncan Tarley leads the way for the Thunder, leading the club with 5 goals while Nicholas Platter tends goal for Minnesota, posting a GAA of 1.19 with 5 shutouts. Notorious ex-Rhino defender Kevin Taylor has found himself to be a regular fixture on the Thunder's backline, as he has appeared in 14 of the Thunder's 16 matches thus far.

is 1-2-2 in their previous 5 games, and Minnesota is 0-3-2 in their

Rhinos Take 4 out of 6 points; Move to 9th in the table
The Rochester Rhinos grabbed 4 of a possible 6 points this past weekend, defeating the Seattle Sounders 1-0 on Friday night, then playing to a scoreless 0-0 draw with the Miami FC Blues on Sunday afternoon. With their efforts, the Rhinos moved ahead two spots in the table, sliding into 9th place and improving their record to 4-5-6, including a mark of 4-1-3 at PaeTec Park.

Luke KreamalmeyerLuke Kreamalmeyer scored the lone goal of Friday night's victory over Seattle early into the match, connecting on a Danny Earls' cross from the left wing side just 7 minutes into the match. It was all the Rhinos would need as Scott Vallow made 2 saves to record his 4th shutout of the season.

The Rhinos, however, would fall victim to Miami's stingy defense on Sunday afternoon. Playing to a 0-0 draw, it was Miami's 8th shutout in their past 9 games. The Rhinos had their chances, as Josh Saunders was forced to make 5 saves on the Rhinos offense, including a brilliant bicycle kick by Mauricio Salles in the second half.
Rhinos Acquire Gregor; Deal Diallo and Harrison

Rhinos Acquire Gregor; Deal Diallo and Harrison

Andrew Gregor is about to gain a new perspective on streamers. The Rhinos acquired the ex-Portland skipper, who expressed his disdain for the streamer throwing actions of the Stampede during the Timbers/Rhinos match at PaeTec Park on June 1, on Wednesday in a 3-team trade. The trade also saw the Rhinos send backup goalkeeper Chase Harrison to Portland, striker Hamed Diallo to the rival Carolina RailHawks, and ex-Carolina forward Jamil Walker to Portland.

Gregor, a veteran in his eleventh season, comes to the Rhinos having tallied 1 assist in 13 matches for the Timbers this season. He's expected to provide the Rhinos with depth at the midfield position, as well as leadership.

Diallo, the reigning Rhinos MVP from 2007, is headed to Carolina after a disappointing start to the 2008 season. After leading the club with 9 goals last season, Diallo was yet to find the net in limited action with the Rhinos this season after failing to find his form under new manager Darren Tilley.

Harrison, who stepped in for injured starter Scott Vallow during the 2007 campaign, posted a record of 7-5-6 and a GAA of 1.28 and 2 shutouts in 18 games last season. The Virginia Tech alum re-signed with the Rhinos in November, and was yet to suit up this season for the Rhinos.

Double Feature! Seattle and Miami
Rochester Rhinos vs. Seattle Sounders July 11
Rochester Rhinos vs. Miami FC Blues July 13

The Rhinos play a pair of home matches this weekend, with their opponents coming from all over. West coast foe Seattle comes to Rochester on Friday, making their lone visit of the 2008 season in a match nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel. Kick-off is slated for 8:00pm. On Sunday, the Rhinos welcome their tropical adversary, the Miami FC Blues, to PaeTec Park for their final visit to Rochester this season. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.

After an embarrassing 0-4-2 start to the season, which saw the offense find the back of the net just once, the Rhinos have posted a record of 3-1-3 in their previous 7 matches scoring 13 goals along the way. Despite the improvement in terms of wins and losses, the Rhinos still find themselves in last place. However, they have begun to narrow the gap between a playoff spot and last place.

Coming off of a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday night, the Rhinos improved to 3-5-5 on the season. Ze Roberto, who was named the USL 1st Division Player of the Week for his effort, scored 2 goals, tying the game at 1-1 in the 46th minute, and adding an insurance marker in the 89th. Johnny Menyongar, who scored the game winner off of a beautiful cross from Danny Earls, and Ross Smith, were named to the Team of the Week.

After beginning the season 3-1-3, the Seattle Sounders find themselves in 4th place in the USL 1st Division, having gone 1-2-5 in their previous 8 matches, bringing their record to 4-3-8. The Sounders are 2-3-4 away from home this season, are 1-1-3 in their previous 5 games, and are in the midst of a 4 game winless streak (0-1-3).

The Sounders are led by Sebastien Le Toux, who ranks 3rd in the USL in goals and points with 6 goals and 14 points (6 goals, 2 assists) to his credit this season. In goal for the Sounders is Chris Eylander, who is 3rd in the league in shutouts with 5, and 5th in the league in GAA with a 0.93 showing. He's appeared in every match for Seattle, with a record of 4-3-8.

Miami FC is 6th in the USL 1st Divison, having gone 4-6-7 through their first 17 games of the season, including a record of 2-3-4 away from home. Miami is currently in the middle of an 8 game unbeaten streak, going 3-0-5 during that span. The Blues are led by the league's leading scorer, Alex Afonso, who has 8 goals and 18 points to his tally this season. Josh Saunders is in goal for Miami, posting a mark of 4-6-6, with a 0.94 GAA. He ranks 5th in the league in GAA, and leads the league with 9 shutouts.

Last 5: Rochester is 2-1-2 in their last 5. Seattle is 1-1-3 in their last 5, and Miami is 2-0-3 in their last 5.
This Season: Rochester and Seattle played to a 1-1 tie at Seattle on May 14. Rochester and Miami played to a 0-0 tie in Rochester on June 7.
All-Time: Rochester is 6-7-2 all-time versus Seattle, going 4-3-1 at home. Rochester is 4-0-1 all-time versus Miami, going 2-0-1 at home.
Downward Trend: Seattle is 1-2-5 in their last 8 games after starting the year 3-1-3.
No Grey Area: Miami has recorded 9 shutouts in their first 17 games of the season. However, in the remaining 8 games they have conceded 16 goals.
3 Away: Veteran midfielder Steve Guppy is 3 games away from playing in 500 games for his career. The Englishman's career includes milestones such as 161 English Premier League matches with Leicester City, 49 appearances for Celtic, and 1 cap for the England.
Rhinos take on DC
Match Preview - July 1, 2008
Rochester Rhinos at D.C. United

Two of the most storied clubs in modern day American soccer history square off on Tuesday night in a third round U.S. Open Cup matchup.

The Rochester Rhinos, who remain the only non-MLS side to win the tournament since the inception of MLS, take on arguably the most storied MLS club in history, D.C. United.

The meeting between the two clubs marks the fifth time the two sides have met, and the third time they have met competitively in the U.S. Open Cup.

In 1996, the inaugural season for the Rochester Rhinos and Major League Soccer, the Rhinos and United met in the final of the U.S. Open Cup, with United defeating the Rhinos 3-0. In 2000, they would meet again in Open Cup play, with United once again upending the Rhinos by the identical score of 3-0. In 2004, the two sides met in a friendly at Frontier Field, which was highlighted by a visit from highly touted teenage midfielder, Freddy Adu. United would go onto win that match as well, by a score of 2-0 and would defeat the Rhinos yet again the following year in a friendly in Cary, NC by a score of 3-2.

The two clubs have combined to win 15 major titles. D.C. boasts 11 (including 4 MLS Cups, 4 Supporters Shields, 1 U.S. Open Cup, 1 CONCACAF Champions' Cup, and 1 Interamerican Cup), while the Rhinos boast a total of 4 titles (3-time A-League champions, and a 1999 U.S. Open Cup championship; the Rhinos have also finished with the A-League's best record on 2 occasions, but no award is given to the team with the best record).

The Rhinos are coming off of a 3-1 defeat to the league leading Charleston Battery on Saturday night, dropping the Rhinos to a last place record of 2-5-5. Ze Roberto continued his trend of stellar play of late, scoring the lone goal of the match for the Rhinos. The loss ended the Rhinos 7 game unbeaten streak, which included a record of 2-0-3 in league play and a record of 2-0 in U.S. Open Cup competition.

In their previous five games, the Rhinos are now 3-1-1 (1-1-1 in USL play, 2-0 in USOC play).

D.C. United, who are 7-7-1 in MLS action this season, are currently in the midst of a 7 game unbeaten streak that has seen them post a 5-0-2 record in the process. They have won their last 4 games, annihilating their opponents 13-4 along the way. Leading the way for United is striker Luciano Emilio, who has found the back of the net 10 times this season. Along with Emilio, United also boasts the MLS' all-time leading scorer, Jaime Moreno, who has netted 6 goals this season, and 118 in his MLS career. Zach Wells is between the pipes for United, with a record of 7-6-1 this season, with a GAA of 1.57.

Last 5: Rochester is 3-1-1 in their last 5 competitive matches. D.C. is 4-0-1 in their last 5 matches.
All-Time: Rochester is 0-2 all-time against D.C United in U.S. Open Cup matches, and 0-4 in all matches against D.C. They are 0-1 in matches played on neutral ground vs. D.C., dropping a friendly in 2005 to United by a score of 3-2.
Taking the Show on the Road: 30 Stampeders will be making the trek to Maryland on Tuesday night to support the Rhinos.

Leading the way for the Charleston Battery is Randi Patterson, who ranks 2nd in the league in goals with 6, as well as points with 12 (6 goals, 0 assists). Patterson is well known to the Rhinos and their supporters, as he has found the back of the net twice against the Rhinos this season.

Fuller, who suited up for the Rhinos from 2003-2005, has seen time in 7 matches thus far for the Rhinos, recording 1 goal and 1 assist. Wilson, a defender who saw time with the Rhinos from 2004-2005 before departing for the MLS, has played in 11 matches for Charleston this season, recording 0 points.
