Rochester Rhinos vs. Atlanta Silverbacks

news: newRhinosSmallLOGO.jpgThe Rochester Rhinos welcome the Atlanta Silverbacks back to PaeTec Park on Saturday night, where they will hope to avenge their loss to the Silverbacks back on August 3 where they dropped a 4-3 decision at PaeTec Park. Kick-off is slated for 7:35pm.

After going undefeated for most of July (a 5-0-2 unbeaten streak during league play), the Rhinos have hit a bit of a snag during the month of August, going just 1-3-1 in their past 5 matches. The Rhinos are coming off of a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Thunder last Saturday night at PaeTec Park, which saw newcomer Daniel Antunez find the back of the net in his PaeTec Park debut. Johnny Menyongar scored his club leading 5th goal of the season in the victory, while Luke Kreamalmeyer added his 4th goal of the season, as well as his 7th assist of the season, during the victory.

As a result of his efforts, Kreamalmeyer was named to the USL First Division's Team of the Week. The first-year Rhino has been on a tear as of late, as he's recorded 3 goals and 4 assists in his past 9 matches.

Macoumba Kandji continues to pace the Silverbacks, as he ranks second in the USL First Division with 10 goals and first in points with 25. He scored twice for Atlanta in their 4-3 victory over the Rhinos earlier this month.

Saturday could also be the debut for Sean Cameron in a Silverbacks uniform, as he was acquired from Miami FC in exchange for Anse Toure earlier in the week.

Last 5: The Rhinos are 1-3-1 in their last 5 matches. Atlanta is 1-2-2 in their last 5 matches.
All-Time: The Rhinos are 10-5-1 all-time against the Silverbacks, and 6-3-1 all-time at home against them.
This Season: The Rhinos dropped a 4-3 decision to Atlanta on August 3. The Rhinos will travel to Atlanta on August 30 in the season finale between the two clubs.

Rochester Rhinos vs. Minnesota Thunder

news: newRhinosSmallLOGO.jpgThe Rochester Rhinos host the Minnesota Thunder at PaeTec Park on Saturday night, in a match that features the 6th and 7th place teams in the USL First Division. Kick-off is slated for 7:35pm.

The Rhinos are coming off of a frustrating 1-0 defeat to their arch rival, the Montreal Impact. The loss prolongs the Rhinos winless streak to 4 games (0-3-1) which comes after the Rhinos went on a 7 match unbeaten streak (5-0-2). With their recent slide, the Rhinos record currently reads 7-8-8, with 7 matches remaining in the 2008 season.

Minnesota, on the other hand, is coming off of a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders last Sunday at National Sports Center. The Thunder have gone unbeaten in their last 3 matches (2-0-1). They are led by Ricardo Sanchez, who has recorded 8 goals and 4 assists this season. Melvin Tarley has also had a fair share of success for the Thunder this season, finding the back of the net 7 times this season. Nicolas Platter has manned the pipes for Minnesota this season, posting a 7-9-6 record with a 1.27 GAA and 5 shutouts.

news: rey.jpgLast 5: The Rhinos are 1-3-1 in their last 5 matches. The Thunder are 3-1-1 in their last 5 matches.
All-Time: The Rhinos are 10-3-1 all-time against Minnesota, and are 5-1 all-time in Rochester against the Thunder.
This Season: The Rhinos are 1-1 against the Thunder this season. They dropped a 1-0 defeat to the Thunder on May 4, before returning to Minnesota to quiet the Thunder 1-0 on July 20.
Deduction: The Rhinos have been deducted 1 point by the USL for playing midfielder Andrew Gregor in a match against Puerto Rico on August 8. Gregor, who was supposed to be serving his yellow card accumulation suspension that night, mistakenly served his suspension during the August 8 game at Puerto Rico when the league mandated that he serve it on August 10 at home against Puerto Rico.".
Bye Bye, Boom Boom: The Rhinos released popular midfielder Rey "Boom Boom" Martinez on Friday for what is being described as "disciplinary reasons." We at www.RhinosZone.com wish Rey the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Rochester Rhinos at Montreal Impact
Match Preview - August 13, 2008
Rochester Rhinos at Montreal Impact

The Rochester Rhinos travel to Montreal to face the hated Impact on Wednesday, capping the 2008 edition of what might be the most fierce rivalry in the USL.

The Rhinos currently sit in 6th place with a record of 7-7-8, but have hit a big of a snag of late going 0-2-1 in their past 3 matches. Their formerly stingy defense has conceded 9 goals during that time. The Rhinos are coming off of a 1-1 draw with the league leading Puerto Rico Islanders last Sunday at PaeTec Park. Alfonso Loera scored the Rhinos lone goal, putting the Rhinos up 1-0 just before halftime.

The Impact are currently 6-9-4 and are in 10th place and coming off of a 2-0 win over the Carolina RailHawks last Friday. Severino Jefferson and Pato Aguilera found the back of the net for the Impact in the victory.

Last month, the Rhinos ended their 10 year winless, and 8 year goalless, drought in Montreal, as Luke Kreamalmeyer and Matthew Delicate led the Rhinos to a brilliant 2-0 win at Stada Saputo on July 27. Two days prior, the Rhinos and Impact played to a 1-1 draw at PaeTec Park.

Last 5: The Rhinos are 1-2-2 in their last 5 games. Montreal is 2-2-1 in their last 5 games.
All-Time: The Rhinos are 14-25-6 all-time against Montreal.
This Season: The Rhinos are 1-0-1 against Montreal this season. The two sides played to a 1-1 draw at PaeTec Park on July 25, before the Rhinos defeated the Impact 2-0 at Stada Saputo on July 27.
Rhinos Get Slaughtered
Rhinos Get Slaughtered

news: newRhinosSmallLOGO.jpgThe Rochester Rhinos suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Puerto Rico Islanders on Friday night, before a crowd of 4,303 at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium. The Rhinos had hoped to shrug off a poor defensive effort that plauged them against Atlanta last Sunday, but unfortunately that was not to be.

Christian A
rrieta opened the scoring for the home side just 12 minutes into the match off of an assist from ex-Rhino Noah Delgado. By the 25th minute the Rhinos found themselves down 2-0 after Edwin Miranda found the back of the net.

However, it appears the Rhinos were unable to sort things out during halftime as the massacre continued when Fabrice Noel scored in the 61st minute to give Puerto Rico a comfortable three goal cushion. Miranda would cap the scoring in the 72nd minute with his second of the night to give the home side a 4-0 victory.

The Rhinos remain in 6th place with the loss, and currently possess a record of 7-7-7.

The Rhinos defense, which conceded a mere 3 goals during their 7 match unbeaten streak, has allowed an abysmal 8 in their previous 2 games. The Rhinos will look to resolve their issue when they seek revenge against Puerto Rico on Sunday night at PaeTec Park. Kick-off is slated for 6:00pm.
Match Previews - August 8 and August 10
Rochester Rhinos vs. Puerto Rico Islanders

news: RHINvPR.jpgThe Rochester Rhinos will face the Puerto Rico Islanders in a home and home series this weekend, with the first game tonight in Puerto Rico at 8:00pm from Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium. The Rhinos will then return to Rochester to play the Islanders at PaeTec Park on Sunday at 6:00pm.

The Rhinos are coming off of a very disappointing, 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Silverbacks last Sunday at PaeTec Park. The Silverbacks were able to exploit the Rhinos defense, which was missing several key components without Tenywa Bonseu (flu) and Scott Palguta (yellow card accumulation).

The Rhinos currently sit in 6th place with a record of 7-6-7. Since their elimination from the U.S. Open Cup (July 1, 2-0 loss to D.C. United), the Rhinos are 5-1-2 in league play.

The Puerto Rico Islanders sit in 3rd place in the USL First Division with a record of 10-6-3. In their previous ten matches, the Islanders are an astounding 8-2-0.

Two of the Islanders key components to their success are former Rochester Rhinos, as Jonny Steele has matured into the USL's top playmaker with a league leading 8 assists, and Noah Delgado has provided the Islanders with reliable offense (2 goals and 3 assists). Josh Hansen is the Islanders leading goal scorer with 5 to his tally this season. Bill Gaudette is between the pipes for Puerto Rico, appearing in every match so far for the Islanders with a league leading 10 wins, along with a GAA of 1.00 and 6 shutouts to his credit.

Last 5: The Rhinos are 3-1-1 in their last 5. Puerto Rico is 4-1-0 in their last 5.
All-Time: The Rhinos are 7-3-3 all-time against Puerto Rico. At home they are 3-0-2 all-time against the Islanders, but are 4-3-1 all-time in Puerto Rico.
This Season: This is the first meeting between the two teams this season.
Gregor Suspended: Andrew Gregor will be forced to sit out tonight's match due to yellow card accumulation suspension.
Unbeaten Streak Snapped; Rhinos lose to Atlanta
news: newRhinosSmallLOGO.jpgThe Rochester Rhinos suffered a frustrating defeat to the Atlanta Silverbacks on Sunday night, as they dropped a 4-3 decision to their Georgia foe. The loss put an end to the Rhinos 7 match unbeaten streak (5-0-2). With the loss, the Rhinos remain in 5th place in the USL First Division, and currently sit 6 points out of first place with 10 games remaining.

Mac Kandji opened the scoring for Atlanta as he converted from the spot in the 42nd minute after Alfonso Loera took him down in the box. However, the Rhinos would equalize 2 minutes later on Andrew Gregor's second goal of the season.

Jerson Monteiro would put Atlanta back in front just 5 minutes into the second half. Kandji would add to the Silverbacks lead just 2 minutes later, scoring his second of the game to give his club a 3-1 lead.

Matthew Delicate would pull the Rhinos within one just a minute later, as he was credited with a spectacular header goal off of a beautiful cross from Steve Guppy. Replays, however, seem to indicate that Silverbacks defender Josh Bolton headed the ball into the back of his own net.

However, David Hayes would convert on a penalty kick for Atlanta in the 71st minute, after Luke Kreamalmeyer brought Kandji down in the box.

To add to the jamboree of penalty kicks, the Rhinos would be awarded a penalty kick of their own after Delicate was involved in a collision in the box. Mauricio Salles would convert on the spot kick, to put the Rhinos back within one on his club leading 5th goal of the season.

However, it wasn't enough for the Rhinos, and the match finished in a frustrating 4-3 defeat, dropping the Rhinos record to 7-6-7.

The Rhinos travel to Puerto Rico on Friday night to take on the red-hot Puerto Rico Islanders, who have won six of their last seven matches. The Rhinos will then travel back to Rochester to play Puerto Rico at home on Sunday.
Rhinos return home to face Atlanta
news: newRhinosSmallLOGO.jpgThe Rochester Rhinos welcome the Atlanta Silverbacks to PaeTec Park tomorrow night, in a meeting between the USL First Division's fifth and sixth place clubs.

The Rhinos are coming off of an excellent weekend home and home series with the rival Montreal Impact, as they played to a 1-1 draw at PaeTec Park on Friday night before the Rhinos ended their Montreal jinx with a 2-0 at Stada Saputo on Sunday afternoon. Young Irish defender Danny Earls was named as the league's Player of the Week after a pair of brilliant performances which saw him score his first goal as a Rhino on Friday night and shut down the Impact offense on Sunday. Luke Kreamalmeyer, who ended the Rhinos 8 year long scoreless drought in Montreal, was also named to the league's Team of the Week. The Rhinos are now 5-0-2 in their last 7 games while the defense has yielded just 3 goals during that span, and currently sit in fifth place in the USL First Division with a record of 7-5-7.

The Silverbacks are led by Mac Kandji (6 goals, 4 assists) and Jason McLaughlin (5 goals, 3 assists), and are coming off of a 2-1 victory over the Charleston Battery on Friday night at RE/MAX Stadium. The Silverbacks boast a pair of former Rhinos in the form of Josh Bolton and David Hayes. Hayes, a Rhino during the 2003 season, was named as the league's Defender of the Year last season. Bolton, a Rhino from 2006-2007, and a Penfield High School graduate, appeared in 18 matches for the Rhinos while he was used mainly as a substitute under former coach Laurie Calloway.

Felipe Quintero has carried the load in goal for Atlanta as of late. He's posted a record of 2-2-2 in 6 games, with a GAA of 2.00.

Last 5: Rochester is 3-0-2 in their last 5 games. Atlanta is 2-2-1 in their last 5.
This Season: This will be the first meeting between the two clubs this season.
All-Time: The Rhinos are 10-4-1 all-time against the Silverbacks, including a mark of 6-2-1 all-time at home. However the Rhinos are 15-4-1, and 9-2-1, all-time against the Ruckus/Silverbacks franchise.
Red Light!: Despite playing the least amount of games thus far in the USL First Division, the Silverbacks are tied for the league lead in goals allowed.
Revenge!: Sunday's matchup can be seen as a sort of attempt at revenge for the Rhinos, as they were eliminated by the Silverbacks 3-2 on aggregate in last year's playoffs.
Danny Earls named Player of the Week
news: Earls2.jpgRochester Rhinos defender Danny Earls was honored as the USL First Division Player of the Week for the week ending of July 27, as he tallied his first goal as a Rhino in a 1-1 draw against the Montreal Impact at home on Friday night, and turned in a stellar defensive effort during Sunday afternoon's 2-0 victory in Montreal.

news: LukeSmall.jpgThe 19-year-old from Dublin, Ireland put the Rhinos in front 1-0 in the 58th minute of Friday night's match. He proceeded to shut down the Impact's offense on Sunday afternoon, including clearing a shot off of the goal line moments after the Rhinos had gone out in front 1-0.

Midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer was also named to the Team of the Week. The first year Rhino scored the club's first goal in Montreal in 8 years, as he struck the ball from 12 yards out past goalkeeper Matt Jordan in the 32nd minute.

The Rhinos will face the Atlanta Silverbacks on Sunday at PaeTec Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
Rhinos Take 4 of 6 Points from Rivals; Move into Tie for 3rd
news: Earls.jpgThe Rochester Rhinos took 4 out of a possible 6 points from the rival Montreal Impact over the weekend, playing to a 1-1 draw at PaeTec Park on Friday night before defeating the Impact 2-0 at Stada Saputo on Sunday afternoon. The win on Sunday marks the Rhinos' first victory in Montreal in 10 years, snapping their 15 regular season game winless drought in Quebec (0-13-2), and putting a halt to their 7-year (2001-2007; 14 regular season matches) goalless drought.

Danny Earls made a bid for the league's Team of the Week, as he scored his first goal as a Rhino on Friday night and turned in a fantastic defensive effort on Sunday afternoon.

Earls put the Rhinos up 1-0 in the 58th minute of Friday night's contest. However, Leonardo DiLorenzo would tie the game just 9 minutes later off of a set piece, knotting the score at 1-1 in the semi-disappointing result.

news: StampedeSaputo-3.jpgLuke Kreamalmeyer would make history for the Rhinos in the 32nd minute on Sunday afternoon, as he became the first Rhino since Jimmy Glenn (8/23/00, a 3-1 loss) to score in Montreal, off of a brilliant strike from 12 yards out, sending the band of 40 Rhinos supporters on hand into a frenzy! Matthew Delicate would add to the lead 8 minutes later, with his 3rd goal of the season, off of a beautifully executed cross from Andrew Gregor, putting the Rhinos up 2-0 just before the halftime whistly. The Rhinos stingy defense would keep the Impact off of the scoreboard in the second half, after Impact forward Roberto Brown was sent off in the 47th minute after elbowing Gregor in the head. Goalkeeper Scott Vallow made 3 saves in the victory, posting his 7th shutout of the season.

The Rhinos have now climbed to third place in the USL First Division, improving their record to 7-5-7. They are in the midst of a seven game unbeaten streak (5-0-2), and are 7-1-4 since beginning the season 0-4-3.

The Rhinos return home to take on the 8th place Atlanta Silverbacks on Sunday, August 3rd at PaeTec Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
Rhinos vs Montreal
Rivalry Renewed.

news: homervsimpactbart2.PNGFriday night kick starts the 2008 edition of perhaps the USL's biggest rivalry: The Rochester Rhinos and Montreal Impact. The match will be broadcast live on national television throughout the United States on Fox Soccer Channel, and in Canada on Sports World. Kick-off is slated for 8:00pm at PaeTec Park this Friday. The second game of the home and home series is scheduled for 3:30pm on Sunday the 27th at Saputo Stadium in Montreal.

The rivalry has had more than it's share of memorable moments, a few of which include a rain soaked match (8/20/05, Rhinos 2:2 Impact), fisticuffs thrown at halftime in the locker room (8/27/04, Rhinos 2:0 Impact), and a controversial no goal in Montreal during the playoffs in 2004 which ultimately denied the Rhinos a chance to knock their rivals from the playoffs that season. (To read more about the rivary visit the Rhinos Paroxysm blog @ http://rhinosparoxysm.blogspot.com )

news: ZeSalles.jpgRhinos midfielder Ze Roberto, who is currently recovering from injury, and striker Mauricio Salles are 2 of just 5 current players involved in the rivalry to have played for both clubs involved in the derby. The Impact possess ex-Rhinos Pato Aguilera, Mauro Biello, and Gabe Gervais. Salles suited up for Montreal in 2006, while Ze Roberto was a mainstay in the Montreal midfield from 2002-2007.

The Rhinos are 4-0-1 in their previous five contests, and 6-1-3 in their last ten, improving their record to 6-5-6 while moving into 3rd place in the USL First Division. Midfielder Johnny Menyongar was named the USL First Division Player of the Week for his efforts in the Rhinos weekend road trip. Menyongar had 2 assists in the Rhinos 3-1 win at Seattle on Friday night, and he scored the lone goal of Sunday's 1-0 victory in Minnesota.

The Impact are 2-2-1 in their last 5 games, and currently sit in 10th place with a record of 5-8-3. Striker Roberto Brown leads the way for Montreal with 2 goals and 3 assists, while midfielder Rocco Placentino has 2 goals and 2 assists. Goalkeeper Matthew Jordan is 5-7-3 in goal for the Impact, with a 0.80 GAA and 5 shutouts to his credit.

All-Time: The Rhinos are 13-24-5 all-time against Montreal. They are 12-7-2 at home, but are 1-17-3 in Montreal.
Last 5: The Rhinos are 4-0-1 in their last 5 games. Montreal is 2-2-1 in their last 5.
Pat Ercoli Night: Friday night will be Pat Ercoli Night at PaeTec Park. The former Rhinos coach managed the club to 3 league titles (1998, 2000 and 2001) and to the 1999 U.S. Open Cup championship in 1999.
